Here’s a collection of the most common questions we come across about using Bulletproof products. This includes tech, supplements and the effects you may experience after consuming these products.
Why should I wear blue light blocking glasses?
The light that is going to hurt your sleep performance is any blue light with a wavelength below 520nm (however, 440-480 is a particularly critical range). Uvex glasses will selectively block out any light less than 550nm while allowing 80%-90% of all other light through.
On top of this, blue light in certain wavelengths has been linked to macular degeneration–an age-related condition of vision loss. (1)
What is the difference between MCT (XCT) Oil and Brain Octane Oil?
It is best to start with Brain Octane oil for optimising brain function. If however, the focus at the moment is for digestive health, it is best to start with Bulletproof MCT (XCT) oil.
There are different lengths of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) which account for the different performance gains that the oils provide. Brain Octane oil is composed of C8, caprylic acid which is found in coconut oil, only in small amounts. When distilled from coconut oil to become Brain Octane oil, this shorter MCT provides the quickest boost in energy and focus. XCT oil is a slightly longer MCT, known as C10, capric acid. The XCT oil doesn’t break down into ketones as quickly as Brain Octane oil does, so although still highly beneficial, it doesn’t provide as much of a cognitive boost. (2)
In short, XCT oil is slightly more affordable than Brain Octane oil, though doesn’t produce the same level of cognitive enhancement that Brain Octane does. You can combine the two oils without harm to achieve both the cognitive gains of Brain Octane and even more of a metabolic boost (to encourage fat-burning) from the added XCT oil. Learn more here.
What is the difference between Collagen Hydrolysate and regular Gelatin?
Collagen hydrolysate differs from regular gelatin as it will dissolve in cold, warm or hot liquids and will not congeal. Gelatin will congeal unless it is mixed with boiling water.
Which products can be used for detoxing?
The type of detoxification depends on what you’re planning to detox for.
A great way to start, however, is to ensure that your liver and digestive system are working at their optimal! You can start by introducing Organic Turmeric Capsules. Take 2 capsules with meals. Turmeric is an amazing liver supportive nutrient – increasing phase two detoxification – which aids in removing toxins from the body.
You can also use Bulletproof Upgraded Coconut Charcoal (taken away from meals or supplements). The benefits of this amazing product are the ‘drawing out’ of toxins in your digestive tract. This powerful agent binds to heavy metals, parasites and old faecal matter that remain in the bowel from old habits. Make sure you drink at least 3 litres of water whilst using this product.
Ensure that you get the advice of a whole-foods inspired naturopath or nutritionist so you get a detox program specific to your needs.
Here are a few popular detox protocol recommendations:
- Dave Asprey wrote a great article on removing toxins from your environment.
- Tim Ferriss provides some simple guidelines on the fundamentals of detoxing
- Ben Greenfield provides a simple 3-step detox process.
Can the Brain Octane Softgels be used in coffee?
The Brain Octane Softgels were designed to be taken on their own, rather than blended in with a drink. So you can take the capsules for convenience (ie. when travelling) instead of bringing Brain Octane Oil with you. We have not heard of anyone using them in coffee because the encapsulation was intended to slow the digestion of Caprylic acid, which would, in turn, allow it to spend more time in your gut. Blending it in coffee would destroy the coating that keeps it intact. Due to the slower release, taking Caprylic acid in capsule form is more effective for treating Candida overgrowth and yeast infections. (3)
Though these softgels have a much lower dose of MCTs than Brain Octane oil, it’s recommended to consume a much lower dose, in capsulated form, when treating for Candida overgrowth or infections, than you would for regular use of Brain Octane oil.
One tablespoon of Brain Octane Oil has 14 g of MCTs while two softgels have only 1.6 g of MCTs.
I feel nauseous after Brain Octane or XCT oil. What should I do?
With Bulletproof coffee, chances are you are increasing your fat intake. Your body needs time to adapt to be able to properly process the change. If the Brain Octane oil is causing nausea, you may want to decrease the amount you are taking. Start with 1 teaspoon of Brain Octane oil in your coffee and gradually increase to an amount you feel comfortable with. If you are not used to a high-fat diet, digestive enzymes may help your body adapt.
If you’re not absorbing or digesting fats properly, you can take an ox bile pill to break down the fats. (4) Poor fat absorption comes down to poor quality bile; which is why supplementing with a similar form of bile (ox bile) will aid in the digestion process. (5)
As for the taste, there are different types of Bulletproof Coffee recipe additions you can make to flavour the coffee while still following the Bulletproof Diet. Soy is not recommended to consume as it is linked to many diseases and health problems. Here is a good article on the dangers of soy if you want to learn more.
Adding a high-quality form of vanilla, cacao powder or chocolate powder are common ways to add more flavour to Bulletproof Coffee.
